Is Retiring in Honduras a Realistic Option?

What comes to mind when you think of retirement? Enjoying a hobby? Volunteering? Or maybe it’s enjoying simply kicking back andnot having an agenda. Or maybe it’s all of these! Now, when you imagine yourself at this point, are you shoveling snow and turning up the thermostat? Likely not… although these aren’t always at the top of your mind when dreaming of your retirement – likely because you figure that’s simply a part of your reality. What if we were to tell you that you could retire in a place where thermostats don’t exist, but where all of your other retirement dreams do? Well, consider yourself told. Honduras is a much easier retirement destination then you may think. Year round spring-like temperatures, access to both the Caribbean and the Pacific and affordable land/housing make Honduras a very tempting country to explore as a retirement option.

Appealing Aspects of Retiring in Honduras

Some other popular Central American countries promote their advanced infrastructure, shiny high-rise buildings and bustling beaches and cities – lovely, no doubt, if that’s the type of environment you’re looking for. But if a simple life is what you seek, a place where time stands still and it’s possible to find a quiet, secluded beach, then Honduras may just be for you. That being said, it’s no doubt important for you to still be in touch with your family and friends from home. Whether it’s a quick trip back, or you hosting the family for the holidays, Honduras is very easily accessed from North America, or anywhere in the world for that matter. Four International airports situated throughout the country, efficient, modern highways – including a stretch of the Pan-American Highway – and ports on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts all make for easy transportation within and into Honduras.

If medical care is of concern to you, worry not. Honduras boasts excellent healthcare in both the capital city of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula near the Caribbean coast. Major hospitals in both of these cities offer doctors who speak English and of whom most have been trained in the U.S., in addition to providing the latest technology in medical equipment.

Honduras also recognizes that we are in the 21st century, and have made every effort to keep up with today’s communication expectations. Landlines, cell phone towers, satellite and VoIP phones are all readily available as well as satellite, DSL and dial-up internet services. The government is committed to growing these areas and the infrastructure improves almost daily.

Activities to Enjoy During Retirement in Honduras

Beaches that go on forever, blue, sparkling water, lush forests and majestic mountains are all at your disposal when you choose to visit, live or retire in Honduras. But those are only the natural wonders this country has to offer! Whether you’re an adventure junkie or prefer a slower pace of life, there is no shortage of activities to keep you busy in Honduras. For those looking for activity why not try whitewater rafting, zip lining through the canopy, hiking, fishing, scuba diving or snorkeling? If you’re after a slower pace, the aforementioned beaches, mountains and cloud forests offer plenty of spas to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. In addition, there are plenty of museums, cultural centers and art exhibits to explore. You may be thinking, but how will I find the time to enjoy all of these wonderful activities in Honduras? Just because you’re living in Honduras doesn’t take away the fact that you still have to clean your house and cook your meals, right? Well, another part of the beauty of retiring in Honduras is the affordability of maid service. Whether it be everyday or only a few times a week, having help around the house is a very common and realistic option to you when you live in Honduras.

It’s obvious that Honduras offers a plethora of reasons for you to consider it as a retirement destination. Why not head down for a bit of a vacation to see if it’s a viable option for you?
