Belize - An Eclectic Escape

From its Caribbean coasts to its jungle interior, Belize boasts natural beauty that includes turquoise water, secluded beaches and inland escapes where you can explore meandering rivers, majestic waterfalls, Mayan ruins and lush rainforests. You would think these traits would bring people running to Belize, to either visit or live, but surprisingly it is not a destination frequently promoted. Belize doesn’t have a budget to promote itself, as the “trendy” place to vacation and it’s not a location you will see splashed across the screen of your television anytime soon. This is unfortunate! Belize is an incredible country and has a lot to offer for a visit or if you’re considering a second or retirement home.

Why Consider Belize?

One of the main reasons North American’s should consider Belize as either a vacation or second home destination is that English is the official language spoken. There are few Central American countries that can say this, and although learning a new language can be thrilling and exciting, it’s nice to be able to communicate from the moment your plane lands. It also makes for an easy transition when meeting new friends and building a social circle of locals and expats alike.

Belize is also a very accessible country. A mere two-hour flight from Miami or only four hours from Toronto. Then, once you arrive, Belize is a very easy country to navigate, as it is only 290 km’s from one end to the other. In addition, the roads and highways get better every year, meaning that transportation around Belize continues to become easier.

Of course, the obvious reason to consider Belize is it’s true, natural beauty! The Caribbean coast offers turquoise waters, white sand beaches, the second-largest barrier reef in the world, mountains, rainforests and ancient Mayan ruins. Around 450 islands and atolls dot the crystalline Caribbean, making it a diver and snorkeler’s paradise and of course, perfect for the boaters and sport-fishing fanatics as well.

If you enjoy large cities because of the rich diversity of culture, but could do without the hustle and bustle, Belize may just be the place for you! Kriol, Mayan, Garifuna, Mennonites, Chinese, Mesitzo and Lebanese are only a few of the primary cultures you will find all over Belize. This is a country that is known for its extremely friendly residents with many different perspectives on life.

Political stability may not be at the forefront when you’re deciding where to visit or consider a retirement home, but maybe it should be. Many Central American countries struggle with their political state, but Belize is one of the few that celebrates a peaceful democracy. There has never been a war in Belize and the currency has never been devaluated. Maybe this is why the people of Belize have such a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle!

There are most certainly many reasons why Belize is an escape worth exploring. Between the stunning scenery, diverse culture and residents and proximity to North America, perhaps the better question is why you haven’t already considered Belize as your next destination?!
